My software engineering role and team at Google were not for me, and I wanted to work on the recruitment/hiring/employee analytics process. So I did something unusual. On paper, I have quit. However, in practice, I have not. I continued to work on a project called Organic Recruitment, developing metrics for analyzing weak ties in the workplace. I also relentlessly networked so, pre-COVID, I could receive more than 1/60 of my diet from Google, a metric of significant connection derived from my cultural tradition. Thus, I remain a worker even if I am not an employee or a contractor. It's nonconforming, it's intellectually independent, the future of Organic Recruitment feels wide-open, and I love it.
