When you code, you sometimes learn quite a bit from an extra pair of eyes reading your work, catching your mistakes, and telling you what to do better. In many courses, instructors or at least teaching assistants will manually read your code and provide this feedback. Some courses, however, are self-paced courses and you will not get customized feedback from an instructor. Even in these types of courses, there are ways for you to learn from others.

The website Quora.com is known as a question-answering website, but about two years ago, it added a rather different new feature called Spaces. Spaces are basically collaborative blogs where a curated community can post and share information about a specific topic.

I started and maintain a number of popular Quora Spaces, some with over a million views and one with hundreds of thousands of followers. Spaces about topics people are passionate about can host strong communities. A Quora Space I started about the Israel-Palestine dynamic, Unity is Strength, has spread to WhatsApp and Discord. Recently, it became the first Space…

Especially at the beginning, the writing life is lonely. Freelancers can feel they are dropping their writing into a vacuum. Having been serious about writing for only a short time, they haven’t made connections with editors and pegged themselves in a professional niche.

They submit, submit, submit–and if they’re lucky, they get rejected, rejected, rejected. That is, they get a rejection if an editor thinks their writing is close enough to bother to write back and share their contact info for future submissions.

Don’t be so isolated

If you’re lucky enough to find a writing partner, it’s not quite so lonely.

A writing partner…

Eleanor North (not her real name) is a well-established New York real estate lawyer by day. By night, she is a wicked-smart writer who is one of the most-followed people on the social media site Quora. Recently, she got her first professional freelance writing gig. She is also extraordinarily devoted, never failing to support those she loves.

By her mid-thirties, Eleanor would be taken, or so one might think. But she has yet to find that very special…
